I was running a bit late, arriving just in time to hear the last chord fading
from Lost In The Sun's last song. When the next band took to the
stage, it wasn't hard to know what we were in for. We grabbed drinks and
found a relatively empty space to stand near the front. The band opening
for Dog Eat Dogma this night was 80 Proof Yob, who appear to
have just arrived from Tennessee (by way of Surrey apparently).
Their website states clearly, "If you show up, you're in the band." This is a
pretty fair claim. The audience is treated just like they were family that
showed up for a reunion. This assumes that at your family reunions there's a
40 ounce bottle of Wild Turkey being passed around and strippers performing.
It's family, but it's a special kind of family.

Picture a not-as-loud version of Nashville Pussy, mix in a bit of Skynard.
Top with a naked woman and a fresh bottle of Wild Turkey. That's it in a
nutshell. It seems like the band spends a lot of time planning costuming
though; bullet belts, leather vests, Squeal Like A Pig T-shirts, and trucker
caps. It was a bit over the top, but pretty harmless. The music was well
played, and the band was pretty tight. Not exactly my taste in music, but it
was a decent set.
I was really there to see Dog Eat Dogma, who have been a lot like SNFU
in my past -- an experience in just missing them play for years. Illness, car
problems, you name it, and I'd miss them play; generally after having
purchased tickets in advance. This year I've witnessed both bands finally, and
it's shaping up to be a good year.

They had a great set, even though they were playing to hardly 2 dozen people.
All of 80 Proof's friends, family, and fans emptied out of the bar before Bob Dog
and the boys hit the stage. Very bad vibe. I'm glad the band stuck it out,
even though they didn't do any encores, and appeared to have cut the set
pretty short with only 8 or 9 songs. Bob wandered about the bar a bit, and
played well. Sound was good, and those that were left in the bar were paying
attention to the show.
I suppose there's so little to do in Vancouver, that people can't drag
themselves out on a Saturday night to attend an excellent punk show.
