Billy And The Lost Boys
Breaking Down The Barriers That Break Down Your Music.

Release Date : September 21, 2004.
Label: Boompa.
Rating: Andy doesn't dig rating stuff.

Wow girl-emo. It's rare to hear this style of music with a chick singer. She seems real, not some weird made-up, calculated creation of pop music. She's got a really cool, hard voice, very punk. Go Billy Go! Boppy emo-punk music, makes you want to jump around and cheer. Nice harmonies on "Good Intentions", with herself no less. She lets loose with a great howl on "Nothing To Prove." This is good proper punk. How does she do this?? It honestly boggles my mind - girls aren't 'supposed' to be like this. Punk girls are usually overly growly, or squawky and cute-girlish (and slightly nauseating). She's really challenging conventions (look at album title??). She's my new favourite female. I don't even really know what to say - I'm shocked, amazed, and blown away. This is really enjoyable. The music itself is hard and edgy but not too off-the-hook for the genre... but you just never hear a girl with this sort of dominating, real, gritty vocal quality... Awesome! There's a lot of of bweEEEOooooo guitar slides. Very rock, not something usually stuck in the middle of these sorts of songs. "Soundtrack For War" is ambient and soaring, closing off the official record. Good tune. The piano is pretty and changes it up and makes it much gentler. And is that a cello in the background? Echoes. War song, wow, powerful, and a very long tune too, maybe a bit too long, but it's a good song so who cares.

I don't really understand the concept of 'extra tracks' on a disc (as opposed to hidden tracks or maybe a live track tossed on the end). Theres three 'bonus tracks' here and they appear to just be studio tracks... why are they 'bonus', instead of just part of the album? Maybe they dont fit the flow but they like the songs too much to toss them entirely? Maybe they dont have enough money to make a separate b-side album? Maybe they are really old songs? The first one "Drive All Night," has a bit of a more delicate, feminine feel... the first one anyhow. Just one guitar and a voice and a low background hum. "The Things You Take" is way more speedmetal than the others. "One Of The Boys" could easily be part of the regular album though. Hmmm. So it's an interesting concept, this 'bonus track' thing... we get more than enough bang for our buck on this one. Solid outing by Billy And The Lost Boys!

Song of choice : "Soundtrack For War"
