Jobriath
Lonely Planet Boy.

Release Date : November 9, 2004.
Label: Sanctuary Records.
Rating: Andy doesn't dig rating stuff.

I'm not certain how to really compose a review of this. It's a compilation of songs from an old 70's-era glam rocker, so it basically sounds like Elton John and David Bowie. There's pianos and trilly bits and heartbeats, steel drums, and a heap of flair. It has that spacerock theme that was so prevalent to the glamrockers, with all this silver foil and layered guitars and distorted noises. It's actually quite tragic-sounding at times - and "Earthling" sounds like they commissioned a very-angry Donald Duck for backing vocals. Anyhow, it's absolutely a celebration of a CD, and if you really want to get back to the good ol' days, this is a great way to do it! Plus you get a lot of nudity in the album artwork and the liner notes were written by Morrissey, and that's always cool.

Looking at said liner notes, the uninitiated (as myself until recently) will find that beyond the razzle-dazzle of the disc lies a stark political commentary - if somewhat backwards. It's more telling of the life that is, than the distatste brought against it. Somehow, Jobriath remained more of a background noise in the history of glam than so many others. Peculiar, and a sad tale. There's a lot to offer here.

Song of choice : "Be Still I Love You" -track 3.
