I want evening to come back to Vancouver. This group of peculiar, artsy, genuine San Fraciscans that make up the band are honestly rather out of this world. They've come together to create some of the oddest noises and one of the most unique records I've heard all year. This disc is full of strange sounds even the 80's didn't know about. It's nice to see something that I can really say is original - yes it has its moments of definite inspiration from other things - what doesn't? But it's a far cry from being able to be pinned to the back of something else as a carbon copy. They're off the hook - they look the part, they sound the part, they move the part, they are the part. It's largely quite ominous and spooky, especially hitting instrumentals like "That's Not A Melody" - eerie music that should be found in a darkened fair, after closing, but somehow, the rides are still running (oh hey look, there's a roller coaster on the cover).... what's that sound??? We are taken away at the end by a pretty piano... pt. one and pt. two.
Another thing that should be mentioned is the beautiful CD artwork. There's a font that was created for the album, a little challenging to read at first and sort of like embroidery. And also like embroidery, everything touches everything else in one huge continuous line that literally runs from the very front, beginning with the band name, threads its way through every page of the insert, drawing shapes of eagles and humans and writing all the lyrics and credits, across each page, leaps onto the tray back (digipak cover...), travels to the bottom, writes out a dedication, keeps going over to the back cover where it spells out the song titles, and then strolls down the spine and back out to the front cover again to end with the album title. Brilliant! I can't imagine how long that took, but it's the sort of dedication that carries over into the bands' approach to the music. Intense, relatable, each piece integral. Beautiful.
You can listen to evening on the CordMag Audio Player.
