The Navies are a less-so version of the Detachment Kit, which I love so much. It has that spazzy, frenetic music, but the vocals are a bit disjointed and lost within all the fuzz and squall. The emo harmonies are there, but the lead scream has neither the grace of a well-done off-key scream, nor the melody of a 'normal' singing voice. It's lost somewhere in the middle, at least on the first track, "An Estate." The wacky low bassy deal at the beginning of "Split Infinitive" is neat. This sounds so dark and slow, a long guitar sustain riding over top. Pure solid evil. This is a really long intro - is this instrumental? Oh there's the vocals. They sound better-suited this song, but still they're so muddy in the background. If this were adjusted a bit, it would sound really cool. It's really all a bit of a mess though, I imagine it's probably really amazing to see live, high energy. This tune goes on forever. There's a little Modest Mouse in the guitar. In a nutshell, it's pandemonium. Awkward (intentional) tempo changes and unfit drum beats all to make the listener feel in a state of unrest. Cool. Effective. Auuuugh!
Song of choice :
Mostly due to the vocals being treated better than they are elsewhere on the album, I'm going to say "Split Infinitive."
