Our Mercury
From Below.

Release Date : February 28, 2006.
Label: Smallman.
Rating: Andy doesn't dig rating stuff.

Is this actually two different singers with startlingly similar voices, or are they just overlapping vocal lines in the opening track, "Spirits Up"? It seems very much like two similarly-voiced vocalists. I'm going to have to look into this. Anyhow, whether the voice is one or two, it's a scritchy-scratchy, yelly, emo-y voice schlopped over top of bouncy punk music, and yes indeed, a church organ. It's getting increasingly hard to critique this style of music, because it all sounds so much the same. That said, the distinction with Our Mercury comes from that scathingly-rough double-vocal approach. I find "Bad Magic" a little dull. Aside from the heavily thumping kick drum, the song lacks the sort of power it really should have. I had pretty high hopes for them on the first track, but it's sort of tapered off a bit as it goes on. It might be the odd marriage of the church organ along with a typically-emo sound that comes off a bit unfounded. Nearer to the end it starts to get a bit of reggae and the vibe becomes almost metal-ish.

Song of choice : "The Basement's Calling" is cute. The flair of the tune reminds me a bit of the Clash, despite the vocals being really different. Actually, "Night Of The Year" is better. A strangely sunny song.
