Popstar Assassins
Moderne.

Release Date : April 11, 2006.
Label: Dangerbird.
Rating: Andy doesn't dig rating stuff.

As the opening track suggests, there's so much tension. The chippy-choppy "Headache(s)" makes you feel like your going for a ride in a car with a jerky 15-year-old learner. And you know what? That's cool. They slightly-clumsy vocals make the songs sound uber-Brit-cool, and the instruments, while not mind-blowing, are definitely interesting. The vocals do get a bit drony at times though - just whiny and flat. but at times that can flip about into an unexpected trill. As the disc goes on, I find myself mildly bored by it, but it tosses in these neat moments that make me want to keep listening to see if there will be a big payoff somewhere. So from a tall start, they flail about a bit, but it might be worth a listen for people looking for something lite-lounge. Something in the vocals reminds me rather of Tom Anselmi, of Vancouver's Copyright (and before that circle c and before that Slow, etc....) fame. The music is nothing like any of those bands however, instead tripping into bloopy electronics and atmospheric warblings by the time we hit "For Robert Wyatt." It's a drifty tune, very fitting for a tribute-style thing, no matter who for.

Song of choice : Dig "Headache(s)" the best.
