I think this disc has a ton of potential but the recording quality makes it sound a touch on the forced side. Like the vocals are too carefully growled. I get the old-tyme recording style is probably what they were after, but with the album coming across as a rock-county effort as opposed to a true western album, then I think it should have kept up a modern-day pace. That said, it's a pretty interesting little disc, certainly living up to its Hillstomp band name. Low, bluesy, rolling, and song titles like "You Done Told Everybody" (not their song) and "Coal Black Mattie" keep this band true to its roots. Fun. Oodles of funky, almost piano-like harmonics and church organs. The recording quality has either grown on me or just become more appropriate for the sort of rolling, dark, backroom saloon songs that are showing up.
Song of choice :
Love the mellow groove of "In The Hole"
