Built To Spill
You In Reverse.

Release Date : April 11, 2006.
Label: Warner Brothers Records.
Rating: Awesome. (Screw points. To each his own!)

I always forget how much I like Built To Spill. I think I always have this thought in my head that they are too arty for their own good or something, but they're not. They're just really really good, making music that flows freely but remains just a bit too goofy for mainstream radio, yet creating a fantastic success despite that. Vocally they are somewhere between Death Cab For Cutie and Neil Young. The intro to the opener "Goin' Against Your Mind" rolls awesomely, with a bass lick that keeps your foot strongly tapping. And when the voice comes in I honestly get chills. Great travelling road music. The outro on this first track - and I'm still amazed by the way that there's so much going on and I'm still only on the first song, features these sad, crying guitars. They are truly weeping. It's gorgeous. There's everything on this album from guitar work akin to 80's hairband balladry, to screeching guitars, to lilty cymbals and bells and tambourines. Great work.

Song of choice : As much as songs like "Saturday" and "Conventional Wisdom" get me going, I have to stick with "Goin' Against Your Mind" for a favourite.
