Hind Hind Legs.

Release Date : May 2, 2006.
Label: Equator.
Rating: Chaotic fun. (Screw points. To each his own!)

Ah the Lovely Feathers! How I adore this band! And I'm thrilled to see them rise as they have. From a little Battle of the Bands I saw in mid-July 2004 in Le Swimming in Montreal, to widely touring and supporting many of their famed citymates... Fantastic to watch that growth. They fit the modern chaotic quirky indie-rock scene to a T, resting happily alongside such other artsyfartsy types as the Arcade Fire and the Unicorns or whatever they're called these days. This new album, touted as their debut full-length, features re-records of a couple tunes from their earlier My Best Friend Daniel disc. The re-records are great, breathing new life into the songs, smoothing them over wonderfully. They remain inherently the same tunes, but just with a slick to them. And overall, everything is more solid and accomplished sound, just together more. They've had some time to hash out their sound from maybe-too-raw to structured madness. Punctuated by squawks and squeals and whispered moments, the disc flows back and forth between a starry dreamscape and a fucking car accident! Voices squeeze together in various forms - harmonies and battles ensue. It's a record of opposites really, but there's a somehow cute overtone about it, whether it's fast or slow. "Frantic" (appropriate title) comes across as a nutty waltz, or maybe the bird dance. We all love the bird dance, don't we? There's a song called "Rod Stewart" that I am desperately waiting to hear. They get really Cure-like on "E-Man Sorrow" - a little gloomy, whiny vocals, twinkly-yet-thudding noises.

Song of choice : Love the tense climaxing of "Mildly Decorated." "Pope John Paul" is also ridiculously catchy though.
