Holy moly they weren't kidding. I was terribly intrigued just by the description on
the CD back. "NYC's disturbingly cult like, circus-related, Halloween-tent-revival
orchestra." That really does an amazing job of summing up. It's WILD, loud,
boisterous and fun. It reeks of decoration, elaborate costumes, parties, sin... it's
like Moulin Rouge meets Scissor Sisters meets Cirque Du Soleil meets the Arcade
Fire. A thousand voices (or as the description puts it, 'way too many teeth') mingle
with horns and accordians. The lead vocalist has a bit of an odd voice, one that
sounds like it should be singing slightly more vicious punk songs, but instead got
stuck in this twisted cabaret type thing. And maybe he got hypnotized and was then
told he's Elvis.Yet it works somehow! It's just so insane. Carnival emo? Folks, I
think we may have stumbled upon a new genre. The piano is jivey, the melodies are
unconventional. You can dance, bop, jump, swim, swing, leap, breakdance, march... a
little something for everyone. "Let's Steal Everything" is like one of those waltzy
eastern European dances that speed up really fast and people are kicking out legs
and breaking dishes and dancing in a big circle and whatnot. I mean, except for the
part where it gets Arabian at the end.
Song of choice :
It's going to be hard to pick out a
favourite! But... for chamring me out of the gate I'll go with the opening "Brother
of the Mayor of Bridgewater"
